Parenting In the Tech Age

Parenting In the Tech

Parenting In the Tech : In a previous article I mentioned the challenges that my wife and I are having with figuring out how to deal with the new technology that now seems to always be in our children’s hands. My wife and I don’t always see eye to eye on how to parent in this new modern tech age.

But, one thing that we are doing in unison is learning and compromising on how to deal with this changing world filled with screens of all sizes that are inundating our children and taking over their lives. Did you know that teens are consuming media technology somewhere between six to nine hours a day?

Some of us adults are scowling over this pervasiveness of technology and how it has invaded our lives making little multitaskers out of our children. It seems like their thumbs are always clicking away on their gadgets as they are also. Talking to us and doing their homework all at the same time. I, however, still think some good can come from this. New age if we can just teach our kids some balance.

Sometimes though, we do have to help our kids a little bit in taking that first step in finding that balance by setting some kind of limits on their technology. These limits will be different for different families depending on their individual circumstances. Maybe a time limit of an hour or two a day may be good for some families.

Maybe no electronics at dinner might be better for others. Some families might even try some kind of trade-off like for every hour of reading and exercising. That their children do they will get the equivalent time with their electronics. As I said, each family will be different.

Now, as my Granddaddy always said, “Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us.” Don’t be afraid of electronics. Just use some common sense of what works for the unique needs of your family. And once again parents, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do.
