The Latest Green Gadgets : Each year, tech savvy enthusiasts gather at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to get a glimpse of the next generation of innovative gadgets to hit the market. From the unusual to the practical, to the extravagant and economical, there was something for everyone. While you’d expect to see the latest smartphones, electronic gaming devices and computer software at this event, this year’s event also saw a significant increase in green gadgets. The future of the electronic industry is definitely moving in a much greener direction. Designers and engineers are incorporating eco-friendly and energy efficient technology into their line of products.
Here is a sampling of some of the innovative green gadgets that made their impressive debut at this year’s CES.
Nest self-programming thermostat
The Nest self-programming thermostat looks like your standard thermostat, but it does so much more. The Nest thermostat has the unique ability to track and remember your preferred temperature settings. It creates a personalized schedule and self-adjusts the temperature for you. If, for example, you turn down the temperature every night at 10:00pm just before bedtime, the Nest will automatically adjust the temperature for you. The Nest also suggests the temperature setting that is the most energy saving by displaying a green leaf on the face of the thermostat. To further help to conserve energy, the thermostat can sense when your home is unoccupied and automatically adjusts itself to the “Auto Away” mode after about two hours. If you are away from home you can easily monitor and adjust the temperature of the Nest thermostat from a web browser on your computer or from an app on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Eco ATM Gadget Recycler
The Eco ATM Gadget Recycler not only gives you a place to recycle your used, broken and outdated electronic devices, it also pays you cash for doing it! The Eco ATM is an automated system that uses electronic diagnostics and artificial intelligence to evaluate the value of your electronic device. Simply place your device in the kiosk and the Eco ATM will analyze it and give you a quote on what the device is worth. If you accept the amount, it gives you the cash right on the spot. All the devices collected are recycled and used for making new equipment.
The SolarKindle
The SolarKindle is the first solar-powered e-reader cover. Created by SolarFocus Technology Company, Ltd., the cover features a lightweight, flexible polymer film solar panel built-in the cover. It also has a dual-charging (USB and solar) reserve battery. The SolarKindle guarantees three months of unplugged reading time under normal sunlight conditions. The cover also has a built-in LED light that can run up to 50 hours continuously without using the main battery.
