The Mobile Phone’s Journey : The mobile phone was launched commercially sometime in 1979 in Japan. This was closely followed by those in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Other countries followed suit including the UK, Mexico and Canada.

However, the first generation (1G) network was introduced in the US in 1983 and cost roughly $100 million. This took over a decade to hit the markets successfully. These mobile sets took about 10 hours to charge and had a talk-time of about an hour. It was a remarkably heavy gadget. Its demand was very high despite its weight and low battery life.

The Mobile Phone’s Journey The second generation came in the 1990s in Finland and was on the GSM standards. The new operators started aggressive marketing while challenging the existing 1G ones. These were followed after a decade by the advanced 3G mobile phones. Developed in Japan, the 3G sets used the WCDMA technology.

These were sets enabling the user to access other mobile communication aspects like the internet. The subsequent generations were based on high-speed packet access (HSPA) enabling the fast transmission of data.

And later at around 2009, it became obvious that, the 3G networks were overwhelmed. They had bandwidth intensive applications featuring streaming media and the like. And around this time, the emergence of the smart phones happened. This changed the way mobile telephony worked and looked.

The mobile devices have common features irrespective of their makes or models. The manufacturers differentiate their gadgets through additional functions insinuating a difference. This provides the devices with an edge to consumers. This is the reason why the mobile phone has had great revolution in the last two decades.

All mobile sets have the following essential features. These features have been present in almost since the cell phone was conceived.

A battery: the source of power
Input system: keypads and touch pads
Basic services: making calls and sending and receiving text messages.
SIM/R-UIM cards: to facilitate the basic services.
IMEI number: identity.

Mobile Phone Operators

The mobile phone industry has seen its usage grow to over six billion as of 2010, and is growing by the day. The leading mobile operator by subscription is based in China. This is partly due to the huge Chinese population.

Mobile Phone Manufacturers

The demand for these sets makes it extremely difficult to match with the supply. With the need for gadgets that match the evolving technology, some manufacturers are coming up with technologically savvy sets. This has seen the devices adopt the technological applications otherwise available via other media. Some manufacturers have ventured into the dual or triple SIM mobiles. This facilitates the owner to have the benefit of two or three lines in a single set.

Mobile Phone usage

Mobiles are used for a myriad of purposes ranging from keeping in touch with family and friends to conducting business. They are also applicable in settling emergency cases. The spotting of more than one mobile phone is not uncommon. Some people do this depending on the usage of the handset. One could be use for business whilst the other is for personal usage.

Also, the acquisition and retention of multiple SIMs could be for purposes of network calling plans. A call abroad is normally bill differently form a local one. This then may form the basis upon which a mobile owner acquires and retains the SIMs.
